Cerebral Palsy (CP) is a medical condition which may occur while in utero, during the birthing process, directly following birth, or within the child's first few years. It has been estimated that over 500,000 people in the United States have Cerebral Palsy. It has also been estimated that injury to the brain occurring at the time of birth accounts for 20% of babies who are born with Cerebral Palsy.
Cerebral Palsy is a non-progressive disorder, although conditions that are associated with it may be progressive, meaning that they can become more or less severe over time. Poor balance, difficulty moving, and problems with a wide range of motor skills are all characteristic for a person who has Cerebral Palsy.
There are four different types of Cerebral Palsy, which are:
- Spastic CP
- Athetoid CP
- Ataxic CP
- Mixed type CP, a combination of two or more of the above mentioned forms of Cerebral Palsy.
There are a variety of causes for Cerebral Palsy. One way a person may develop Cerebral Palsy is from brain damage to the cerebrum. The cerebrum is a large part of the brain that has many important functions, including establishing intelligence, controlling movements of muscles, understanding high brain functions, perceiving sensory impulses, and storing information. When the cerebrum is injured, many of its functions may be affected. Another cause of Cerebral Palsy is poor development of the brain while the fetus is forming. Some situations that may cause brain damage while still in the uterus are: infections, oxygen deficiency, extreme jaundice, and brain bleeding.
Cerebral Palsy is a permanent condition, meaning that there is no cure. There are many different kinds of treatment plans that consist of specialists, therapy, assistive technologies, and medication that may be able to maintain the condition and promote development in many areas.
