Between 5% and 10% of people who have Cerebral Palsy have a rare form that is called Ataxic Cerebral Palsy. This type of CP causes a lack of balance and hinders a person’s depth perception. Fine motor skills (small movements) and gross motor skills (large movements) may both be influenced by this condition. It is typical to have an unsteady or wobbly type of walk. Poor coordination, walking with the feet wide apart, shaking, and tremors are all symptoms of Ataxic CP due to inconsistencies with muscle tone. Many times when a person with this disorder tries to reach for an object or tries to write with their arm he or she will have extreme tremors, making the tasks very difficult to perform. It is also very hard to try to make fast or spontaneous movements.
